   Home Church, typefaces
Manrope and Poppins, served from the app rather than from Google.

WHY THESE ARE BUNDLED. The app used to pull both from fonts.googleapis.com
on every cold launch. That was one render blocking request to a third party
before anything could be drawn, it put every user's network address in front
of Google for no functional gain, and it meant a phone opening the app in a
building with concrete walls read the whole thing in the fallback serif.

Inside a packaged app there was never a reason for it. These files ship in
the binary, cost nothing at runtime, and are one fewer third party to name
   in the privacy policy.

WHAT IS HERE. Latin subset only, which is what an English language church in
Metairie needs. Google serves several more subsets of these families,
Cyrillic and Vietnamese among them, and none of them would ever be drawn.
   Two files, 32KB total.

Both families are licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which
permits bundling and redistribution. See assets/fonts/OFL.txt.

font-display: swap matches what Google's stylesheet asked for. With local
files it almost never comes into play, but a phone under memory pressure can
still delay a font, and text appearing in the fallback beats text not
   appearing at all.

WHY THE READING FACE IS NO LONGER A SERIF. Cormorant Light held this slot
until it didn't. It is a display face: hairline thins, a small x-height,
long extenders. At 26px on a dark fill that reads as ornament, and at 17px
in a paragraph it reads as thin, which is the size the guides are actually
read at for twenty minutes at a stretch with a group. Light text on the
dark theme's ground made it worse, because halation eats the thin strokes.
Manrope gives up the flourish and keeps the words.

/* --- Manrope, the reading face -------------------------------------------
ONE FILE, EVERY WEIGHT, which is a departure from the file-per-weight shape
this stylesheet used to have. Manrope's latin subset ships as a variable
font carrying the whole 200-800 range in 24KB, less than any single one of
the five static Cormorant files it replaces. The range is declared on the
descriptor so the browser interpolates rather than synthesising.

NO ITALIC. Manrope has no italic cut, and Google publishes none, so the
handful of places that ask for one (pull quotes, empty states, the practice
subtitle) get the browser's synthetic oblique. It is a slant rather than a
drawn italic. That is a real, if small, loss against Cormorant, which had
two true italics, and it is the price of the trade above. */
